The Aquatics Department at the JCC promotes Health & Wellness for members of all ages. From our baby swim class, kids group and private swim lessons to our distinguished award winning Stingrays swim team, lifeguard training program, and a selection of adult water aerobics classes, we offer something for everyone.

AMERICAN RED CROSS LIFEGUARD TRAINING

Have you always wanted to become a lifeguard?

 

The JCC Aquatics Department is offering a 12-week American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, beginning Thursday, March 6. Upon completion of the course, you will receive certifications in ARC Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and ARC Standard First Aid.

 

Minimum Age: 15 years old (upon completion of course)


Day & Time:
Thursday evenings, 7-10pm

*Sunday, April 6, 9am-5pm, Mandatory for CPR certification


Cost:
$395 ($75 cancellation fee). There will be additional charges for books and class materials.


Prerequisites:
Swim 300 yards continuously using each of the following strokes: 100 yards front crawl with rotary breathing and 100 yards of breaststroke. The remaining 100 yards are the participant’s choice of crawl or breastroke. Swim 20 yards. Submerge to a minimum depth of 7 ft., retrieve a 10-pound object and return to starting point in the time of 1 minute and 40 seconds.

Registration Dates for Swim 2007-2008
Priority re-registration for children enrolled in the previous year’s swim program, sports facility members, nursery school and camp members may register the week of SEPTEMBER 3, 2007. Please bring any Red Cross swim level card. If you do not have a card, or are not sure of your swim level, please have a swimsuit and be prepared to be tested by a JCC Swim Instructor!

Registration must be made on the above dates only!  No exceptions!  All Saturday classes must be pre-paid since the
Front Desk is closed for business on Saturdays.
 
A birth certificate is required for children registering for the first time. Please bring your child’s American Red Cross swim level card if he or she has received one.

Little Goldfish

Parent/caregiver and child work together to learn basic skills such as bubble blowing, kicking, big arms, and safety jumps. Through games, water play and the use of flotation devices, children become comfortable in the pool. Children must wear a swim diaper!

Introduction to Water Skills - Level l
Purpose: Helps students feel comfortable in the water. Level I participants learn to enter and exit water safely, open eyes underwater
and pick up a submerged object, submerge mouth and nose, float on front and back, swim on front and back using arm and leg actions, exhale underwater through mouth and nose, explore arm and hand movements, use a lifejacket, and follow basic water safety rules.

Fundamental Aquatic Skills - Level II
This class gives students success with fundamental skills. Level 2 participants learn to enter water by stepping or jumping from the side, open eyes underwater and pick up a submerged object, roll over from front to back and back to front, swim on side, exit water safely using ladder or side, float on front and back, tread water using arm and leg motions, move in the water while wearing a life jacket, submerge entire head, perform front and back glide, and swim on front and back using combined strokes.

Stroke Development - Level III
This class builds on the skills in level 2 through additional guided practice. Swimmers develop confidence in their strokes and improve other aquatic skills. Level III participants learn to jump into deep water from the side, bob with the head fully submerged, perform survival float, butterfly-kick and body motion, use “Check, Call, Care” in an emergency, dive from kneeling or standing position, use rotary breathing in horizontal position, change from horizontal to vertical position on front and back, perform the HELP and HUDDLE positions, submerge and retrieve an object, perform front and back glide, perform front and back crawl, and perform a reaching assist.

Stroke Improvement - Level IV
This class develops confidence in the skills learned and improves other aquatic skills. Level IV participants learn to perform shallow dive or dive from stride position, perform open turns on front and back using any stroke, use safe diving rules, perform a throwing assist, swim underwater, tread water using sculling arm motions and kick, perform compact jump into water from a height while
wearing life jacket, care for conscious choking victim, perform the following : front and back crawl, swim on side using scissors-like kick, breaststroke, butterfly, and elementary backstroke.

Stroke Refinement - Level V 
This class provides further coordination and refinement of strokes. Level V participants learn to perform standing dive, pike surface dive, butterfly, shallow dive, glide two body lengths and begin any front stroke, front flip turn, breaststroke, backstroke flip turn, elementary backstroke, tuck surface dive, front and back crawl, and sidestroke.

Swimming and Skill Proficiency - Level VI
This class refines the strokes so students swim them with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Level VI is designed with “menu” options that focus on preparing students to participate in more advanced courses, including the Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Training courses. These options include personal water safety, fitness swimmer, lifeguard readiness, and
fundamentals of diving.

Competitive Stroke Technique
Great preparation for the swim team! Work on all competitive strokes, starts, and turns and endurance to participate in competitive workouts. Level VI certificate required. Aquatic Director approval also required.

Pool Birthday Party!
Sunday afternoon Pool Parties. Children must be between the ages of 6 and 10 years old. 20 children maximum.  $315, which includes supervised pool activities and party room! Call x321for available dates and times! Registration fee required.

 

Swim Team - The Stingrays        AQ02
Must be able to proficiently swim 25 yards of the crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke and have some competitive swim background. Practices must be attended regularly, and championship participation is required. All home and away meets are held on Sundays.

If you are joining for the first time, you must call in September for tryout appointment.

There will be a $25 non-refundable test fee that will be applied to the class cost if student passes swim test)

1. Must swim 500 yards continuously using these strokes in the following order:

  • 200 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing propellant kick.
  • 100 yards of breaststroke
  • 200 yards of either front crawl using rhythmic breathing or breaststroke.  These 200 yards can be a mixture of both strokes.

2. Swim 200 using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet. Retrieve a 10 pound object, return to surface and swim 20 yards. Back to starting point. Must hold a 10 pound object in both hands while keeping your face above water.

Adult Classes

Aquasize
Water resistant, low-impact, non-weight bearing exercises. Use full range of motion during exercises to stretch and tone as well as improve cardiovascular fitness. Aquasize benefits all areas of the body. Swimming skills not required. Physician’s note required upon request.

Fit & Trim Water Aerobics
A challenging water aerobics class for people who want an intensive workout in the water. Combines shallow and deep water exercises. Barbells, water belts and noodles will be used.  This class will give you a great cardio-workout!

About the Director, Laura Grenadier
A graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Laura has more than 25 years of aquatic experience as a Waterfront and Pool Director and instructor. She is a certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard. Laura heads up the Early Childhood Center swimming program and Summer Camp swimming program and is Head Coach for our distinguished Stingray swim team.
