Art School
Kids, teens and adults can all take advantage of our professional art studios and expert art faculty. We offer classes for the beginner, those just exploring an interest in the arts and the more advanced student.

Immerse yourself in the Arts…

JCC Maccabi Artsfest is a premier arts and Maccabi experience for Jewish teens grades 8 – 12.  Participants choose an art specialty and take part in performances and master classes.  This annual summer experience, held in selected communities throughout North America, features a wide variety of social activities, Artists-in-Residence who are at the top of their fields, opening and closing events and performances, and community service, while it strengthens bonds to Jewish heritage, community, and Israel.

Art Specialties have included: Rock/Pop Bands, Dance/Choreography, Filmmaking, Visual Arts, Jazz/ World Music, Classical Music, Acting, Music Theater, Photography, Creative Writing, Costume Design, Vocal Music & Culinary Arts.

JCC Maccabi Artsfest will take place in Minneapolis, Minnesota, August 17-22, 2008.

Art Gallery
The Art Gallery at the JCC was generously endowed by Marjorie and Norman Alexander. It is a showcase for community artists, both professional and amateur. In addition, the Art School uses this gallery for faculty and student shows, photographic essays, and group exhibits. Kids Art Club
In this relaxed, gentle introduction to the world of art, kids will explore their creativity while experimenting with a variety of materials, some quite unusual! Through a process-based approach, children will learn some basic artistic skills and appreciate their world in a new way. Wonderful materials included. Snack is served.

Clayworks

Discover the exciting world of ceramics in this very popular program! We’ll slab, coil, and more to create everything from crazy creatures to beautiful bowls. Students will learn a variety of technical skills and a basic introduction to wheel throwing in our professional ceramic studio. Materials included.

Wheel Throwing for Young Adults
NEW!
Learn to throw functional pottery from our master potter. Our professional instructor will teach the basics of throwing, trimming, glazing and more. All levels of students welcome.

Teen Classes

Life Drawing
Contour, gesture, modeling techniques, along with basic anatomy and proportion will be studied as students draw from the nude model. This class is for the novice as well as for the experienced student. Bring charcoal and large newsprint pad to first class.

Ceramic Pottery Workshop 

Working with clay relieves stress! With the technical foundation demonstrated in this class, you will explore your aesthetic senses and begin to develop a personal style. Open to potters and sculptors of all levels. In a short time you will create personalized pieces to adorn your home or give as gifts. Instruction is individualized. Make time in your busy week for yourself. Our small class size and relaxed pace will be most welcome!

Clay Fee of $45.00 per 25 lbs. is payable to the JCC at the first class. This is for adult ceramics classes only. The fee covers all bisque and glaze firings and all glazing materials. Clay must be purchased from the Art Department.


Open Ceramic Studio Hours for Adult Students currently registered in classes will be posted during the first week of the semester. Each adult student is allotted 2 hours of open studio time. There will be a charge for any additional time of $10/hour of use.


Teens may enroll in adult evening classes with permission of the instructor.


The Art Department at the JCC has a strong INTERNSHIP PROGRAM FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS seeking to fulfill their school’s community service requirements. Most students assist instructors in our after school children’s art classes. To arrange an interview, please call the Art Department Director.
