Wednesday, February 18, 2009 8:00pm

Join Irshad Manji, the Muslim reformer whom The New York Times calls "Osama bin Laden’s worst nightmare," as she launches a series of public conversations about moral courage in journalism, politics, religion and beyond, engaging with thought leaders who will illuminate and influence the future of free expression in a fragile world. Manji is author of the international best seller The Trouble with Islam Today: A Muslims Call for Reform in Her Faith and creator of the Emmy-nominated PBS documentary, Faith Without Fear. New York University's Robert F. Wagner School of Public Service is partnering with Manji on the Moral Courage Project, which teaches us that real diversity is about different ideas, not just identities. Christiane Amanpour is CNN's chief international correspondent. Her coverage of the Gulf War, genocide and natural disasters around the globe have made her one of the most recognizable international correspondents on American television. Missing, directed by Costa-Gavras, stars Jack Lemmon, Sissy Spacek, and John Shea. It is based on the true story of American journalist Charles Horman, who disappeared in the bloody aftermath of the US-backed Chilean coup of 1973 that deposed President Salvador Allende. Both the film and Thomas Hauser’s book, The Execution of Charles Horman were removed from the market in Chile, following a lawsuit filed against Costa-Gavras and Universal’s parent company, MCA by former US Ambassador Nathaniel Davis, and two others. Set largely during the days and weeks following Horman’s disappearance, the film depicts his father and wife searching in vain to determine his fate.
Moderator: John Shea, Actor, Screenwriter, Director.
Special Guest: Joyce Horman, widow of Charles Horman; and the founder of the Charles Horman Truth Project which continues the pursuit of justice in Chile and supports on-going investigations of the human rights violations that were carried out in Augusto Pinochet’s detention centers and efforts to bring him & his subordinates to justice.

Being Jewish in France confidently continues into the 21st century, investigating charges of rising anti-Semitism and the country’s complex attitudes toward Israel. A fascinating & provocative exploration of 100 years of French-Jewish history masterfully given human dimension by interviews with leading French politicians , intellectuals and artists, lush archival material, memorable music, and clips from classic French films with Jewish themes.

This wonderful and heartwarming film tells the story of the champion women swimmers of the legendary Vienna sports club Hakoah. Our host/moderator will introduce the film and follow it with extra scenes not included in the film and an interactive discussion. The club was founded in 1909 and grew into one of Europe’s biggest athletic organizations and its women’s swim team dominated national competitions in the 1930’s. An uplifting tale of survival and friendship, Zilberman daringly re-connects the lives and memories of those women who challenged the status quo and bravely share their complex legacy of tolerance and integrity with future generations.
